James H. Hargis, RMSN, and the Beach-
master Unit 2 insignia he designed.
Beachmaster Unit Iwo adopted this past week
a drawing that depicts in caricature the unit's
mission of directing small craft to the beach
areas during an assault.
Sketched by James H, Hargis, RMS, the emb-
lem denotes a chimp tugging the small craft to
the beach in puppet fashion, while the semaphore
flag and electronic streaks symbolize the
Beachmaster communication methods with
boat wave commanders.
LCDR Sidney M. Skjei, the unit commanding
officer, approved Hargis' sketch, and the emb-
lem will be seen soon on various pieces of equip-
ment used by the Beachmasters, who have long
been familiar about the Amphibious Base for
their yellow spheres on portions of their gear
and clothing.
Hargis attended the Corcoran Art Institute in
Washington, D.C. for one year while working
with the Washington Post as a copy boy.
