Liaily two C-130' were modified for the program by LAS under the umbrella of Big Safari programs, In 1966, two C-130E(1) Skyhooks
were sent from Pope AFB to augment the Heavy Chain Program and were further modified by LAS.
These were Rivet Yards (combat Sam). The 1198th pioneered many systems that were later incorporated into the Combat Talon fleet such as fuel tank baffling, High-Speed Low--Level Aerial Delivery System (HSLLADS), E-4 autopilot pitch channel monitor, Forward Looking Infrared system (FLIR), and electronic self-protection. When the 1198th was demobilized in 1972, the aircraft were demodified into Combat Talons and joined the fleet.
